With a distributed system instead, there is no direct communication between the Lora gateway and end-devices. 

Every IoT device would have its individual Lora gateway which is its master node. Data packets could only be sent by this master node to its subordinate nodes when it receives information from the internet server, after which it transmits it to these subordinate nodes. These subordinate nodes are fixed on devices such as light bulbs and water valves; they do not normally send any data back to their master node. When new information requires an update of data packets received by these devices, a message has to be sent from the server to all master nodes, then from one master node to all subordinate nodes.

A Lora gateway connects a Lora chip to the internet, allowing the chip to communicate over the Internet and with remote devices. A gateway is a combination of hardware and software, a smartphone app. It can be as simple as a nod sensor that you put in your garden, for instance, and then log on to a website to get how much water your plants got last night. Or it could be an industrial solution for monitoring physical assets in real-time using sensors combined with the cloud and the Internet of Things.

Lora Gateway looks after all low-level (PHY) communications protocols and provides a telemetry gateway between network and end-user devices. Lorawan gateway has a built-in RF transceiver that allows it to send Echolink commands, or receive and reply to standard Lorawan messages. Therefore, developers can design their applications that work in coordination with iBeacon signals and interact with them within Bluetooth range.

A sensor that has LoRaWAN capability can be deployed on a street-side or mounted on a utility pole in range of the gateway. Once registered by the gateway and given location-specific addressing, the sensor will send its data to the gateway which then forwards it as one or more messages to the cloud infrastructure. The message is then routed via a local access network (LAN) to a cloud gateway and finally arrives in an endpoint application that is interested in receiving this data.

Lorawan is a communication system built on the ANT protocol that operates on 868 MHz (Europe) and 915MHz (USA). The frequency bandwidth of 868-915 MHz is globally available.
